Be Prepared - Frozen Pipes and Water Intrusions

In the wintertime here in the low-country of South Carolina we can dodge some nasty winter weather, that can hamper much of the rest of the country, but one thing we can’t avoid is the potential for frozen pipes, and the subsequent water damage it can cause. Sure we don’t get the snow like most of the country does, but we are still at risk for freezing weather, and SERVPRO of Greater Northern Charleston and Dorchester County is ready to respond. We provide 24/7 emergency response to all water intrusions caused by pipe bursts and leaks.
It becomes our mission during the winter months to assure that people are prepared and know that we are able to respond in a very quick manner when they have leaks and floods. Most people forget to take precautions when those frigid nights stack up. Something as simple as letting your faucets drip, and opening the cabinets under sinks, can prevent thousands of dollars in damage. Making sure outside spigots are covered and insulated is also extremely important in preventing pipe breaks and bursts.
As freezing weather mounts the water inside your pipes takes a bit of time to freeze, by letting the water flow, and not sit in the pipe, it decreases the chance of the water freezing into ice. Ice expands within the pipe and will eventually cause the pipe to rupture once the water is turned on, and there is no way for it go. Taking precautions to assure the water doesn’t freeze in your pipes is incredibly important, and something we can forget to do here in the low-country as we are used to mild winters and warm weather for most of the year.
So don’t let the freezing temperatures catch you off-guard, and if they do and you unfortunately find yourself the victim of water intrusions inside your home or business, know that there are businesses like ours here at SERVPRO of Greater Northern Charleston that truly care about saving your property and returning it back to normal. Even if you think you got all of the water out yourself after an intrusion, don’t hesitate to have us come out and take some moisture readings to make sure water isn’t sitting under your floors, or behind your walls, creating mold issues when the warmer weather and humidity return.
We are here to help! Call us today if you need an assessment for water damage.
